TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint which is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. Pain in the TMJ is commonly referred to as temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

Causes of TMJ Pain:

  • Teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism)
  • Arthritis or degeneration of the joint
  • Dislocation of the disc between the ball and socket
  • Stress and muscle tension

 

TMJ Appliances:

  • Bite Plane: A custom-made splint that is designed to reduce the bite force and provide support to the jaw muscles.
  • Anterior Deprogrammer: An appliance designed to reduce muscle tension and improve the bite.
  • Lucia Jig: An orthopedic device used to reposition the jaw and improve the bite.
  • Brux Checker: A device used to monitor bruxism (teeth grinding) and assess the severity of the problem.

 

These appliances can provide relief from TMJ pain, improve bite and jaw function, and prevent further damage to the joint.
